NFL (week 11) for November 19

New England Patriots (7-2, 2-2 away) @ Carolina Panthers (6-3, 3-1 home), Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC, Tuesday, November 19, 12.40pm

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are the flavour of the month. After Newton’s splashy entrance to the NFL (posting spectacular numbers that did not translate into wins) things have turned around for the Panthers. Newton may not be putting up head-spinning stats, but the victories keep piling up for the Panthers, who will go for their sixth in a row when they host the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. Newton has not thrown for more than 249 yards during the five-game run, but he has seven scoring passes and three TD runs in that span while directing a ball-control offence that averages 127.8 yards on the ground. Although the Panthers scored at least 30 points in four straight games prior to last week's 10-9 win at San Francisco, they have been dominant on the other side of the ball, ranking second in the league in points allowed at 12.8 per game. Carolina’s defence, led by tackling machine Luke Kuechly at linebacker, has surrendered 11.4 points during the streak. Defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy have combined for 13.5 sacks.

It hasn't been an easy season for Brady, who owns the lowest passer rating of his career at 82.7 mainly due to his inexperienced core of receivers. New England is coming off its best offensive performance of the season in the mauling of the Steelers, getting 432 yards and four TD passes from Brady and 100-yard games from tight end Rob Gronkowski (pictured) and wideouts Danny Amendola and rookie Aaron Dobson. Stevan Ridley complemented the aerial attack with 115 yards rushing and two TDs as the Patriots amassed 610 yards of total offence. The Patriots' defence has been rocked by season-ending injuries to Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork and middle linebacker Jerod Mayo, but could get back star cornerback Aqib Talib, who has been sidelined the past three games by a hip injury. The Patriots hold a two-game lead in the AFC East while Carolina is a game behind New Orleans in the NFC South. I love the Pats in this spot – road underdogs with a record of 5-0 in their past five Monday night games. Brady is also 13-4 on Monday night for the Patriots.

Confirmed bet

New England Patriots WIN @ Carolina Panthers (one unit @ $2.25) LOSE (20-24)

Leans

New England Patriots @ Carolina Panthers +46 $1.91 LOSE (20-24)
Tom Brady passing yards +275.5 $1.87 WIN (296 yards)

NBA for November 19

Charlotte Bobcats (5-5, 3-2 away) @ Chicago Bulls (5-3, 4-0 home), United Center, Chicago, IL, Tuesday, November 19, 12.10pm

There are plenty of big lines and action plays available among the six NBA games scheduled today. One of the trickier games on the card features an improving Chicago as they host a Bobcats line-up being offered a 12-point start at the line. The Bulls’ slow start to the season has been quickly forgotten now that the defence is matching up with the offensive potential. Chicago is allowing an average of 82 points in the last four contests and is coming off a 110-94 victory over previously unbeaten Indiana on Saturday. Derrick Rose (pictured) returned from a one-game absence due to a hamstring injury and put together one of his best games of the season against the Pacers, knocking down six 3-pointers and handing out four assists without a turnover. Chicago looks like a title contender of late while scoring at least 96 points in each of its last four wins to go along with the solid defense. The Bull shot 11-of-19 from 3-point range and went over 100 points for the first time this season.

The Bobcats just got finished with one Eastern Conference contender in a 97-81 home loss to the Miami Heat and will get Indiana later this month. Charlotte is not quite as stout defensively as the Bulls but is in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense. Charlotte has held all but two of its opponents under the century mark and limited the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers to an average of 81.5 points in its past two road games (both wins). Kemba Walker is the most consistent scorer for the Bobcats but is having a rough go of it lately, shooting 27.7 per cent from the floor over the last five games. The former Connecticut star shot under 50 per cent in each of his last eight contests. The Bulls have taken seven of the past eight in the series and posted a 105-75 triumph in the last meeting on February 22, 2013, but the road team is a surprising 7-0 ATS while the ‘under’ is 5-0-1 in the last six.

NHL for November 19

Anaheim Ducks (15-5-2, 32pts) @ Minnesota Wild (12-8-0, 24pts), CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh, PA, Tuesday, November 19, 11.40am

There are just three games on today’s slate in the NHL but no easy pickings. Case in point – the visit of Anaheim (red-hot at home, so-so on the road) to Pittsburgh (one win in their past five. Despite those records, this game will feature some of the NHL’s most dangerous skaters including Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Evgeni Malkin (pictured) although the latter is mired in a career-worst 13-game goalless stretch for the Penguins. Crosby has 25 points and Getzlaf and Perry each have 23 to rank among the NHL leaders. Malkin is second on the Pittsburgh squad (12-8-0) with 18 points, yet only three have been goals (the last on October 17). Crosby has also managed just one goal in his last 10 games. The Penguins have scored exactly one goal in every defeat of this 1-4-0 stretch. Pittsburgh's downturn after a strong start to the season mirrors the recent play of Anaheim (15-5-2), which is 0-2-1 entering the finale of this four-game trip.

The Ducks felt their play was better in Friday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Carolina. They have outshot every opponent on this trip. One reason for the improved play could be Getzlaf’s return to the line-up after he missed three games with an upper-body injury. He recorded an assist to give him seven points in three games. Perry had a goal and an assist after he was held without point in the first two games of the trip. Special teams continue to plague the Ducks. They are at 11.7 per cent on the power play, including a league-worst 6.5 per cent on the road, and their penalty kill has also fared poorly at 75.4 percent. Saku Koivu, Matt Beleskey and Mathieu Perreault all returned to practice on Sunday. Koivu missed 10 games with a concussion, Beleskey hasn’t played since October 5 with a broken thumb and Perreault sat out Friday with the flu. Crosby will face the Ducks for the first time in three seasons. Anaheim won the last meeting 2-1 two seasons ago when he was injured.

Confirmed bets

Anaheim Ducks @ Pittsburgh Penguins -5.5 (one unit @ $1.80) WIN (1-3)
Boston Bruins WIN @ Carolina Hurricanes (one unit @ $1.68) WIN (4-1)

Leans

Boston Bruins @ Carolina Hurricanes TT -2.5 $1.64 WIN (4-1)
Anaheim Ducks @ Pittsburgh Penguins WIN $1.67 WIN (1-3)
Calgary Flames TT +2.5 $1.92 @ Winnipeg Jets WIN (5-4)
