Sea Moon was the big mover in the latest Caulfield Cup order of entry after his win in Saturday’s Group II Herbert Power Stakes (2400m). The Lloyd Williams-owned import posted his first win in Australia, which earned him a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption. Sea Moon, Foreteller, Mr O’ceirin and Tuscan Fire all have a ballot exemption for the Caulfield Cup, which features 41 stayers remaining in contention for Saturday’s event. Williams has seven runners remaining in the Caulfield Cup field, including last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, Sydney Cup winner Mourayan and Metropolitan Handicap winner Seville. Macedon Lodge gallopers Tanby and Fawkner are borderline cases to get a run in the Caulfield Cup but could move into the field if Williams decides not to accept with his higher-rated performers. International gallopers Dandino and Simenon are almost certain to gain a start in the Caulfield Cup while Forgotten Voice is equal 28th in line for a run in the event. The Melbourne Racing Club will declare the Caulfield Cup field on Tuesday morning while the barrier draw will take place before Wednesday’s Thousand Guineas meeting.

Latest Caulfield Cup market (with thanks to Centrebet): Hawkspur (pictured) $4.60, Royal Descent $7.00, Dandino $7.50, Jet Away $10, Silent Achiever $10, Fawkner $13, Dear Demi $13, Masked Marvel $19, Super Cool $19

NHL for October 14

Ottawa Senators (1-1-2) @ Anaheim Ducks (3-1-0), Honda Center, Anaheim, CA, Monday, October 14, 11.10am

In one of the biggest off-season trades, the Anaheim Ducks sent four-time 30-goal scorer Bobby Ryan to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a package centered around up-and-coming forward Jakob Silfverberg (pictured). While Ryan has played well for the Senators in the early going, Silfverberg has shined a bit brighter. Silfverberg looks to lead the Ducks to a fourth consecutive victory here when they host his former team. After recording 19 points in 48 games during his 2012-13 rookie season with Ottawa (1-1-2), Silfverberg has greatly surpassed expectations with the Ducks (3-1-0). He has already posted a team-leading four goals and an assist, becoming the third player in franchise history to score four times in his first four games, joining Teemu Selanne in 1996 and Daniel Winnik last season. Silfverberg scored twice while Winnik and Dustin Penner added a goal and an assist as the Ducks cruised to a 6-0 win over the New York Rangers in Friday’s home opener. Perreault, Corey Perry and Selanne chipped in with two assists apiece.

Ryan, meanwhile, has two goals and two assists in his first four games with Ottawa. The left winger scored again Saturday, but the Senators suffered their first regulation loss 3-2 at San Jose after getting outshot 50-23, including 24-5 in the third period. Robin Lehner matched a franchise record with 47 saves in his season debut for Ottawa, which has dropped three straight (0-1-2). The Senators could go back to No. 1 goalie Craig Anderson, who made 35 saves in a season-opening 1-0 win at Buffalo before allowing eight goals in his last two games. Anderson is 2-6-0 with a 3.34 goals-against average against the Ducks, posting a 4.37 GAA in losing three consecutive match-ups. Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller, who stopped all 34 shots against the Rangers, is 2-0-0 with a 1.44 GAA. He has also thrived in three career starts against the Senators, winning each while compiling a 1.62 GAA. The Ducks are 9-1-1 in their last 11 against the Senators, including four wins in the 2006-07 Stanley Cup Finals.

Suggested bet: Anaheim WIN (2.5 units @ $1.77) WIN, Anaheim TT +2.5 (2.5 units @ $1.77) WIN (1-4)

MLB playoffs for October 14

ALCS game 2 (Tigers led 1-0): Detroit Tigers @ Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park, Boston, MT, Monday, October 14, 11.10am

The two highest-scoring teams in Major League Baseball combined for a grand total of one run in the opener of the American League Championship Series as the Detroit Tigers look to make it consecutive victories when they visit the Boston Red Sox in Game 2. Detroit’s Jhonny Peralta drove in the lone run on a night in which Boston’s only hit was Daniel Nava’s one-out single in the ninth. The Red Sox struck out 17 times to match a post-season record for a nine-inning game. Boston, which led the majors with 853 runs in the regular season, was blanked at home in the post-season for the first time since a Game 5 loss to the Chicago Cubs in the 1918 World Series. The task doesn’t get easier in Game 2 when the Red Sox face 21-game winner Max Scherzer. Peralta went 3-for-4 and was serenaded by the Boston fans due to his 50-game suspension for violating baseball’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.

RH Scherzer (21-3, 2.90 ERA) suffered one of his three defeats at Fenway Park while splitting two starts against Boston. He won two games in the AL Division Series against Oakland – the second coming in relief – and held right-handed hitters to a .165 average in the regular season. Scherzer struck out 10 or more batters nine times, including 11 against the Athletics in his ALDS start. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (pictured, 12-1, 1.74) went 6-1 with a 1.99 ERA in nine home starts this season. He didn’t face Detroit during an injury-interrupted campaign and has a 2-1 record and 3.58 ERA in eight career starts against the Tigers. Buchholz received a no-decision in his ALDS start against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. The over is 6-1-1 in Scherzer’s last eight starts against the Red Sox and 12-5 in the last 17 meetings between these sides. The Red Sox are 5-1 in Buchholz’s last six starts against Detroit.

Suggested bets: Boston (three units @ $1.83) WIN, game total +7 (one unit @ $1.87) WIN (5-6)

Football (World Cup qualifiers) for October 14

World Cup qualifier – Africa round 3, 1st leg: Ethiopia v Nigeria, Addis Ababa Stadium, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Monday, October 14, 12.10am

Round 3 in the CAF (African) region means playoffs for the 2014 World Cup finals. Three of the teams that feature – Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal – have been there before while the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia are within reach of Brazil 2014. The first leg of the round 3 tie between Ethiopia and the Super Eagles of Nigeria was put back 24 hours by the spectacularly named Ethiopian Football Federation secretary Yigsaw Bezuayehu, basically, because he could. That's the way of African football. The hosts have a massive advantage with the game to be played in Addis Ababa, which is situated at an altitude of 2355m (7726ft). The Walya Antelopes are known for their slick passing and the high pressing game they exhibited at the last African Cup of Nations in South Africa. The relative inexperience of the side might be their undoing against the current African champions over two legs but I’m confident Ethiopia will take something from this game.

Stephen Keshi’s Nigerian side went unbeaten in the group stage of qualifying, topping Group F by five points after winning three and drawing three of their six games, conceding just three goals in the process. Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw will be without forward Getaneh Kebede, missing with an ankle injury, but he is confident the rest of his squad will be able to cope with his absence. Bishaw is likely to look to Saladin Said Ahmed to spearhead the attack in Kebede's absence after Ahmed, like Kebede, scored four of Ethiopia's eight goals in qualifying from Group A. They won four of their six matches, surviving a late scare in the final game, coming from behind to beat Central African Republic 2-1 when defeat would have seen them overtaken at the top of the group by South Africa. The last meeting between these two sides at the Addis Ababa stadium in Ethiopia was a 2-2 draw in the 2012 Nations Cup qualifiers.

Suggested bets: Ethiopia WIN or DRAW (1.5 units @ $1.91) LOSE, correct score 1-1 (0.5 units @ $7.00) LOSE (1-2)

NFL (week 6) for October 14

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5, 0-3 away) @ Denver Broncos (5-0, 3-0 home), Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, CO, Monday, October 14, 7.10am

Amid the minefield that is the NFL week 6 card, I thought we’d go for the closest thing as there is to a lock thanks to the red-hot Denver Broncos. I have scant interest in the massive 27-point line, which makes the Broncos the biggest favourite in League history. But the game total looks very juicy. When Broncos coach John Fox was asked if last week’s narrow victory over the Cowboys was good for his team after it breezed through its first four weeks, he made it clear he prefers the less-stressful moments: “We don't go into each game trying to see how close we can make it,” Fox said.

Few are expecting this home match-up with the winless Jacksonville Jaguars to be at all close. The Broncos (5-0), winners of 16 consecutive regular-season games, matched Jacksonville’s point total for the season in a 51-48 victory over Dallas last week. Peyton Manning (pictured) threw his first interception but finished 33 of 42 for 414 yards and four touchdown passes, pushing his league-best total to 20. Denver, which leads the league with 489.8 yards and 46.0 points per game, won its first four contests by an average of 22.3 points. The Broncos rank last against the pass with 347.0 yards allowed per game and are 29th in overall defence at 416.6 total yards, though they’ve been playing without suspended linebacker Von Miller and injured defensive back Champ Bailey.

However, Bailey was a full participant at practice on. Denver will face Jacksonville’s league-worst offence that averages 251.8 yards. The Jaguars will also likely have Chad Henne under center rather than Blaine Gabbert, who is expected to sit out with a hamstring injury. Henne went 7 of 13 for 89 yards and a score in relief. He’s completed 55.8 per cent of his passes and will be making his third start in place of Gabbert, who ranks last with a passer rating of 36.0 while throwing seven interceptions. Justin Blackmon may be able to help, as he caught five passes for 136 yards in his return from a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The running game isn’t in nearly as good shape. Maurice Jones-Drew is averaging 2.8 yards per carry, and the Jaguars rank 30th with 58.8 yards per game on the ground. Jacksonville will attempt to improve on that number without left tackle Luke Joeckel, who fractured his ankle against the Rams and will miss the rest of the season. Denver ranks first against the run with an average of 69.6 yards allowed, though that number is somewhat deceiving given opponents’ need to throw while trying to overcome the large deficits they’ve faced, which also inflates the Broncos’ ugly pass defence numbers. The Broncos have faced 21.2 rushing attempts per game, second fewest in the league.

Suggested bets: Game total +53 (four units @ $1.91) WIN, Jacksonville +27 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (19-35)
