NFL (week 2) for September 16

Carolina Panthers (0-1) @ Buffalo Bills (0-1), Ralph Wilson Stadium, Buffalo, NY, Monday, September 16, 3am

EJ Manuel (pictured) earned a lot of praise after his NFL debut. Cam Newton can certainly relate given his impressive rookie year, though his season debut didn’t go so well. Both two-dimensional signal-callers look to help their teams bounce back from narrow losses to playoff teams from last season as the Buffalo Bills host the Carolina Panthers here. The only quarterback selected in the first round of this year’s draft, Manuel very nearly led the Bills to a stunning upset of New England last Sunday. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, but Buffalo lost 23-21 on a late field goal. Though he had just 47 total yards as the Bills (0-1) went scoreless on their final five drives and blew a six-point lead, Manuel did help Buffalo overcome an early 10-point deficit and received mostly positive reviews. The Panthers haven’t visited Buffalo since 2005, when they picked up their only win in five tries against the Bills.

Manuel could only hope to have the type of rookie season Newton did when he earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. Newton joined Drew Bledsoe as the only 22-year-old players in NFL history to throw for 4000 yards, and he rushed for 706 with 14 touchdowns. Newton and the Panthers (0-1) didn’t look so electric in Sunday's 12-7 home loss to Seattle. He did complete 16 of 23 passes but for a career-low 125 yards, and he gained 38 yards on five carries as Carolina fell to 4-14 when he fails to rush for 50. Newton and the Panthers will look to take advantage of a depleted Bills secondary. Already without two starters in cornerback Stephon Gilmore (wrist) and safety Jairus Byrd (feet), Buffalo lost Ron Brooks last Sunday. Used as a third cornerback in passing situations, Brooks was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday on a broken right foot. Carolina lost starting right guard Garry Williams for the season to a torn ACL and MCL in the opener.

MLB for September 16

AL: Tampa Bay Rays (81-66, 36-38 away) @ Minnesota Twins (63-84, 30-43 home), Target Field, Minneapolis, MN, Monday, September 16, 4.10am

Another match-up between the Tampa Bay Rays and Minnesota Twins yesterday ended in yet another Tampa Bay win. The Rays can match their longest winning streak in franchise history versus a single opponent with a series sweep at Target Field as David Price (pictured) tries to avoid losing a career-high fourth straight start. Tampa Bay’s 7-0 win over the Twins marked its 11th straight in the series. The Rays (81-66) haven't beaten the same team 12 times in a row since April 30-September 24, 2008 (against Baltimore). They maintained a 1 1/2-game edge over Cleveland for the AL’s second wild-card spot, while New York and Baltimore (both lost yesterday) trail by 2 1/2 and three games, respectively. Kansas City also trails by three games after a 1-0 win over Detroit.

Price, however, has dropped three straight starts for the second time in his career, though he's pitched at least seven innings in each. The other time he lost three in a row was July 20-August 2, 2011. He owns a 4.50 ERA during the skid, though his last defeat was more due to a lack of offence. He limited Boston to two runs and three hits over eight innings with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 home loss on Wednesday, a strong bounce-back performance after he yielded six runs and a season-high 11 hits in a defeat to the Los Angeles Angels on September 5. Price is 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA over three career starts against the Twins. The left-hander limited Minnesota to two runs over seven innings of a 4-2 road win in the only match-up last season.

It appears to be a particularly inopportune time for the scuffling Twins (63-84) to face the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner after recording nine hits in the series’ first two contests. Still without Joe Mauer due to a concussion, Minnesota has totaled 17 runs during a 2-6 stretch, going 3 for 22 (.136) with runners in scoring position over the last five. The club's bullpen could also be taxed here with left-hander Pedro Hernandez (3-1, 5.25) getting the start. He needed 89 pitches to get through 4 2/3 innings of a 6-3 win over the Angels on Monday and has thrown six innings just once in nine starts. Five different Rays recorded at least one RBI Saturday, with Desmond Jennings going 2 for 5 and driving in two. James Loney, though, went 0 for 5 to end his eight-game hitting streak.

Suggested bet: Rays -1.5 (two units @ $1.79) LOSE (4-6)

EPL for September 16

Southampton v West Ham United, St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, UK, Monday, September 16, 1am

In his 200th appearance for Southampton, Rickie Lambert searches for his 200th career league goal to cap a wonderful start to the season for the man who used to supplement his part-time football earnings with work in a beetroot bottling plant.  The Saints will hope he hasn’t returned from the Ukraine too jaded. They need him at his best, having scored just four goals in their last eight Premier League matches. Southampton have only failed to dominate possession in one league game under Mauricco Pochettino, who has added a bit of aggression to the squad with the arrival of Pablo Osvaldo (pictured). The £15m striker could be the difference between the sides. The Saints have lost just two of their last 10 league matches at home. Before this weekend’s fixtures, Southampton had committed more fouls per game on average (17) than any other top-flight side this season.

West Ham have been struggling to find the net too – just 12 goals in their last 11 games – and with their whole attacking style focused on Andy Carroll, they will badly miss the injured centre-forward. They’re not a side that likes to play pretty passing football through midfield. The Hammers have attempted fewer passes than any other side in the Premier League this season and have the worst passing accuracy. They look to get it forward or wide early with Carroll the target for the final ball in. New signing Mladen Petric, who looked to be in the autumn of his career at Fulham, and Modigo Maiga, who’s been hit and miss so far, don’t seem to carry much threat for the Saints. They have had just five shots on target in total in their three matches so far, and managed zero against Stoke in their last game.

Suggested bet: Southampton WIN (2.75 units @ $1.77) LOSE, Correct Score 1-0 (0.75 units @ $5.50) LOSE, Correct Score 2-0 (0.5 units @ $6.75) LOSE (0-0)
