Boxing for September 15

Unified Light-Middleweight championship: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0) v Saul Canelo Alvarez (42-0-1), MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV, Sunday, September 15, 1.30pm

Every fight Floyd Mayweather jnr is in, the talk is whether or not this is the fight that his streak comes to an end, and every time he has been able to come out on top. Mayweather will be fighting just 133 days since his last fight, the quickest turnaround for him in 12 years. This a very intriguing match-up of two undefeated fighters separated by a 13-year age difference. The 36-year old Mayweather may be the best-conditioned athlete in professional sports. His unbelievable quickness and cat-like reflexes makes it very difficult for opponents to land solid punches, and then the conditioning allows him to pull away in the later rounds. Despite being just 23 years old, Saul Canelo Alvarez has fought 42 victories, just two less than Mayweather. While he lacks the experience of Mayweather, he makes up for it with extreme power in his punches. Alvarez has the opportunity to become the face of boxing by pulling off the upset if he is able to use his strength advantage.

When he is focused and ready to fight, there may not be a more dominating athlete in all of sports than Mayweather. Of his 44 career victories, 26 have come way of knockout, showing that he is able to compete and win in any kind of matchup. His experience is his biggest advantage in the. In his last bout against Robert Guerrero on May 4, Mayweather was able to win by decision with a comfortable score of 117-111 from all three judges. Four of Mayweather's past five victories have come by decision. The other fight was the controversial bout against Victor Ortiz, in which "Money" threw a knockout punch at the end of the fourth round when it appeared Ortiz was apologizing for an illegal head-butt. This match is different because Mayweather will not have the most knockout power in the ring, as that belongs to Alvarez.

The 23-year old from Mexico is a true KO artist. Of his 42 career victories, 30 have come by way of knockout. In his last match against previously undefeated Austin Trout on April 20, Alvarez showed that he does have the stamina and conditioning to go the distance in a match too, winning by unanimous decision. For this match to happen, Alvarez had to get his weight down to 152, two pounds less than what he normally fights at. For Alvarez to pull off the upset, he must stick to his game plan and not let the emotions of the fight take over. Even though he has devastating knockout power, he must be patient and pick his moments right. If he comes out swinging early and doesn't land the knockout punch, then it will be extremely difficult to beat Mayweather, who gets stronger as the fight goes on.

Suggested bet: Mayweather jnr by points decision (two units @ $1.62) WIN

CFL (week 12) for September 15

Toronto Argonauts (6-4) @ Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-2), Mosaic Field at Taylor Field, Regina, SK, Sunday, September 15, 11.35am

The Saskatchewan Roughriders looked human in their loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, failing to reach the end zone for the first time all season. Saskatchewan is hoping a return home will erase the sting of last week’s setback when it hosts the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday. Roughriders QB Darian Durant (pictured) was sacked a season-high eight times by the Blue Bombers, but combined with league-leading running back Kory Sheets for 158 rushing yards and should have an easier time against Toronto’s less-imposing defence. Sheets leads the league with 1214 rushing yards – 274 more than anyone else. Linebacker Renauld Williams, who has a team-leading 42 tackles and seven sacks along with one interception return for a touchdown, will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL against the Blue Bombers. Center Dominic Picard was fined an undisclosed amount by the league following an incident in Week 11 in which he threw a punch.

The Argonauts maintained their East Division lead and avoided a three-game losing skid thanks to back-up quarterback Zach Collaros, who completed 30-of-43 passes for 336 yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing score against the Montreal Alouettes. Toronto was struggling on offence without starters Ricky Ray and Chad Kackert, and losing star slotback Chad Owens prior to last week was not a promising sign, but four interceptions by the Argonauts’ defence and a nine-catch, 91-yard performance by wide receiver Dontrelle Inman showed Toronto might have enough depth to weather their mid-season injury storm. Prior to last week, Toronto had recorded 16 points in seven-plus quarters after losing Ray early against the Calgary Stampeders. Collaros has thrown for 1267 yards and is completing 69.7 per cent of his passes, while only trailing Kackert for the team rushing lead by 2 yards. Toronto traded offensive lineman Marc Parenteau to Winnipeg for running back Anthony Woodson in an attempt to shore up its running game.

Suggested bets: Saskatchewan -8 (two units @ 1.87) LOSE, game total +55 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (31-29)

(1) Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0) @ (6) Texas A&M Aggies (2-0), Kyle Field, College Station, TX, Sunday, September 15, 5.30am

The two-time defending national champions take on the Heisman Trophy quarterback who nearly derailed their title defence a year ago when top-ranked Alabama travels to No. 6 Texas A&M for a SEC showdown. Star quarterback Johnny Manziel (pictured) and the Aggies put their nation-best eight-game winning streak on the line against Alabama’s vaunted defense in one of the most-anticipated match-ups of the season. Last year in Tuscaloosa, Manziel's Heisman campaign hit high gear when he orchestrated a 29-24 upset of the undefeated Crimson Tide. Coach Kevin Sumlin’s team continues to put up huge offensive numbers, averaging 58.5 points and 600 yards through two games, but the defence has been susceptible even against inferior opponents. After being suspended for the first half of the opener against Rice, Manziel came off the bench to throw three TD passes, and he rolled up 462 total yards and four scores (three passing) last week against Sam Houston State.

The Aggies might need more eye-popping numbers from Manziel this week, as the defence has surrendered 29.5 points and 449.5 yards per contest. Alabama coach Nick Saban has had two weeks to prepare for Manziel and the Aggies' high-powered offence, as the Crimson Tide had a week off following a 35-10 win over Virginia Tech in the opener. Alabama hasn't lost a road or neutral-site game since November 6, 2010, a span of 15 games – the longest active streak in the nation. It's the first trip to College Station, Texas, for the Crimson Tide since a 30-10 victory in 1988. The Crimson Tide were dominant on defence and special teams against the Hokies but experienced the growing pains associated with an inexperienced offensive line. Three of Alabama’s five touchdowns in the opener were produced by the defence and special teams, and Christion Jones accounted for three of the scores with a 74-yard punt return, a 93-yard kickoff return and a 39-yard touchdown catch. The non-traditional scores helped mask a lacklustre offensive effort, as Alabama managed only 206 total yards.

Suggested bet: Texas A&M +9 (two units @ $1.91) WIN (49-42)

MLB for September 15

AL: Oakland Athletics (86-61, 39-34 away) @ Texas Rangers (81-65, 39-33 home), Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, TX, Sunday, September 15, 3.10am

The Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers have met 17 times this season. They have yet to pair their two best pitchers until now, when Bartolo Colon (pictured) and Yu Darvish will square off as the Athletics try to continue pulling away in the AL West. With its 9-8 victory over Texas last night, Oakland (86-61) took a 4 1/2-game advantage in the division, while the Rangers’ lead in the wild-card standings grew more tenuous. Texas leads Tampa Bay by one game for the top spot and Cleveland by 2 1/2 games. The Rangers (81-65) nearly mustered an impressive comeback from a 9-2 deficit but still lost their fourth straight. Colon and Darvish have both struggled to pick up wins of late. Darvish (12-8, 2.84 ERA) is winless in five starts and has lost three straight for the first time in his career. He held Pittsburgh to a run and four hits in seven innings of a 1-0 loss Monday. It marked the sixth straight start in which the right-hander received two runs or fewer of support. Colon (15-6, 2.85) was able to do what Darvish wishes to do, snapping a five-start winless streak on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Houston in which he allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings.

The game will feature a clash of styles as baseball's premier strikeout artist faces one of its best control pitchers. Though he still leads the major leagues handily with 246, Darvish has struck out 7.50 batters per nine innings over his last two starts after averaging 13.78 over his previous seven. Colon has pitched to contact, and his 4.97 strikeouts per nine innings are the second-lowest total in the major leagues. Colon also has the second-lowest ratio of walks per nine innings in the AL at 1.37, while Darvish's 3.23 per nine innings ranks among the 20 highest in the majors. No team has given Darvish more headaches than the A's. Oakland is responsible for five of his 17 career losses and reached him for five runs and a season-high six walks in five innings of an 11-4 victory on September 4. Brandon Moss has homered off Darvish in each of his last two starts against the A's and hit his 27th home run Friday. Darvish, who went 32 2/3 innings without giving up a home run earlier this season, has allowed 24 since April 30, fifth-worst in baseball. Colon’s 19 wins against Texas are his most against any team, but he's 2/3 with a 4.29 ERA versus the Rangers since 2009.

Suggested bet: Athletics WIN (1.5 units @ $2.42) WIN, game total -8.5 (2.5 units @ $1.83) WIN (1-0)

EPL for September 14-15

Aston Villa (1-0-2) v Newcastle United (1-1-1), Villa Park, Birmingham, UK, Sunday, September 15, midnight

Ask any neutral which of these sides has made the better start to the new season, and the majority would suggest Aston Villa but the Premier League table reveals a different story. Newcastle are a point better off with four compared to Villa’s three. So why does the picture look rosy in Birmingham while it’s all fog on the Tyne? Villa have faced three from the top four, narrowly losing to Chelsea and Liverpool after their terrific 3-1 win away to Arsenal on the opening day. Paul Lambert was able to ride the storm threatening to swamp him last winter thanks to the understanding of the Villa faithful. Last man in on deadline day itself was Libor Kozak (pictured) from Lazio. He scored against Italy for the Czech Republic on Tuesday night and should make his Premier League bow in this one. At £7m he represents Lambert’s costliest new recruit, but if he can emulate the success of the manager’s last £7m acquisition nobody will be complaining. Christian Benteke goes from strength to strength – 23 goals last season, four already this season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle lost their opener heavily 4-0 at Manchester City, then slugged out a forgettable goalless draw at St James’ Park against West Ham. Only a Hatem Ben Arfa wonder strike prevented the same outcome last time out against Fulham. Want-away midfielder Yohan Cabaye came on as a substitute in that game for his first appearance of the campaign. The Frenchman got the winner when these sides met at Villa Park last January, and getting him focussed and committed to the cause again will be crucial if Alan Pardew is to steer Newcastle away from dangerous waters. Unhappy with a lack of new arrivals, the Toon Army are restless again. After a run of four Premier League wins at Villa Park against Newcastle, Villa have failed to beat the Magpies on home soil in their past two league encounters. Villa have scored four goals from 11 shots on target so far this season (while Newcastle have scored just once from 10 shots on target). The Villains have scored four goals after three EPL games this season. At the same stage last term they had just two.

Suggested bet: Aston Villa WIN (two units @ $2.05) LOSE (1-2)
