Daily tips for April 20

AFL (rd 4) for April 20

Richmond v Collingwood, MCG, Saturday, April 20, 2.10pm

The Tiger army is celebrating the club's best start to a season since 1995 with three wins in a row against Carlton, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs. Meanwhile, the Magpies lost their first game for the season on Sunday after wins over North Melbourne and Carlton. They have a lengthy injury list that includes Nick Maxwell, Dayne Beams, Darren Jolly and Luke Ball.

The Tigers opened at $2.05 outsiders but are now into $1.83, marking one of the biggest plunges in recent memory. We have to concur – the 2013 edition of the Richmond side looks steelier than any Tiger line-up of the past decade. They look to have the edge in the ruck, should be able to match the Collingwood midfield while Richmond’s long kicking efficiency is among the best in the league.

Suggested bet: Richmond 1-39 (three units) LOSE, game total -205.5 (one unit) WIN (79-113)

Other tips for April 20

Hawthorn v Fremantle +32.5 LOSE 118-76
Gold Coast v Port Adelaide -13.5
West Coast v Carlton +18.5

Racing returns to Royal Randwick today for BMW Doncaster Day featuring the Group 1 $2m BMW Doncaster Mile. Another wet week in Sydney has soaked the track meaning today’s rating is a heavy (9).

All eyes will be on Sydney’s leading lady Gai Waterhouse, who if successful in this year’s edition of the race with Pierro, will surpass her late father TJ Smith’s record with eight Doncaster wins.

The other headline on the nine race card, the Group 1 $550,000 Patinack Farm Australian Oaks, has also attracted a quality field. Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi (Jim Cassidy) will be looking to add another Group 1 victory. However it is NZ-based Habibi (Vinnie Colgan), who boasts six wins from eight-start record, and will go into the race as favourite.

But our best of the day comes up south of the border in the 7-Eleven Pink Ribbon Cup over 1400m at Caulfield, where they’ll be racing on a dead (5). #6 Club Command is very much a Caulfield 1400m specialist and he arrives at that trip third-up after two outstanding runs back from a spell.

Best of the day: Caulfield R6 #7 Club Command (win two units) LOSE 3rd

MLB for April 20

San Diego Padres @ San Francisco Giants, AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA, Saturday, April 20, 12.15pm

Few starting pitchers have been better than Madison Bumgarner thus far. There may not be one off to a worse start than Edinson Volquez. Those two squaring off appears to give the San Francisco Giants a big edge at AT&T Park going into the season series opener between these NL West foes.

While the Padres (5-10) are coming off an impressive three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium, outscoring Los Angeles 22-7, the Giants (9-7) were swept in three at Milwaukee this week while allowing 21 runs.

But Bumgarner (3-0, 1.77 ERA) could give them a good chance to bounce back. He’s looking to become the first NL pitcher to reach four wins after yielding four runs through his first three, spanning 20 and 1/3 innings.

Suggested bet: Giants -1.5 (three units) LOSE 2-3

Other tips

Dodgers WIN @ Orioles POSTPONED
Marlins @ Reds -1.5 LOSE (2-1)
Mariners @ Rangers -1.5 WIN (0-7)

NHL for April 20

Nashville Predators @ Chicago Blackhawks, United Center, Chicago, IL, Saturday, April 20, 10.30am

The Chicago Blackhawks have clinched the top spot in the Western Conference. Next up is the league’s best overall record. Chicago will try to extend its winning streak to seven – and point streak to 10 – when the visiting Nashville Predators take the ice for the first time since their franchise record-tying seventh straight loss eliminated them from playoff contention.

We see little reason to change our pattern of betting against the Predators. Chicago’s goaltenders have allowed just seven goals in their last six games, so when you combine that with Nashville’s impotent offence, we can comfortably add the Blackhawks puck line to our picks.

Suggested bet: Blackhawks -1.5 (three units) LOSE (4-5)

Other tips

Rangers @ Sabres +5 WIN (8-4)
Oilers @ Avalanche WIN LOSE (4-1)
Ducks @ Flames -5.5 WIN (1-2)
