AFL (R12)
for June 15
Essendon v
Gold Coast, Etihad Stadium, Saturday, June 15, 7.40pm
Place
a bet on the “head to head” market in any AFL round 12 match and if
your team scores 90 points or more but loses, Centrebet will refund your first bet
up to $100 cash!
The Suns
are the flavour of the week after their upset win over North Melbourne last
week, and a win here would have them on the cusp of the top eight. As exciting
a brand of football they’ve been playing in just their this season of AFL
competition, it’s easy to get too far ahead in terms of expectations. A slog in
the wet at Metricon Stadium is a very different proposition to a Dome clash
against a side out to consolidate its top four status.
Essendon
may have only managed a five-point win over Carlton last week (form franked
last night after the Blues led for the majority of their clash against Hawthorn) but finished the game strongly – always a solid indicator for the
following week. With Charlie Dixon out for Gold Coast, the Bombers will be able
to further exert their height advantage and should dominate if they
can win their share of footy out of the centre.

Slow and
heavy tracks are again the order of the day with the feature race of the day
the listed $200,000 Channel 7 Ipswich Cup. Despite more than 50 mls of rain in
Melbourne this week, today’s card at Moonee Valley will be run on a slow (6),
and we’ll be keeping a close eye on race two, the Slickpix Hcp over 1200m.
Trainer Peter Moody suits up #2 Mr Make Believe, and the 6yo gelding looks
superbly placed here second-up. He won over 1000m on a dead (5) at Caulfield
first-up but his best form has been on heavier tracks. Jake Duffy stays aboard
and takes his 2kg claim here, while his charge jumps from barrier one which
will have him well placed on the speed.

Detroit
Tigers (36-28, 14-18 away) @ Minnesota Twins (29-34, 15-15 home), Target Field,
Minneapolis, MN, Saturday, June 15, 10.10am
Rick
Porcello has played a part in the Detroit Tigers’ streak of solid starts but will
try to earn his first win over the Minnesota Twins in nearly two years in the
opener of this three-game series. Detroit’s starters have allowed three runs or
fewer in 18 of the last 19 games with Porcello (3-3, 4.86 ERA) pitching in
three of those contests. The right-hander has been effective in most of his
last eight starts as well, going 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA, and gave up two runs and
three hits over six innings in a 6-4 win over Cleveland on Saturday.
Porcello
has allowed three runs in all but one of those starts but the lone exception
was against the Twins. Porcello surrendered five runs and 10 hits in five
innings to them May 23 but his teammates helped him avoid a loss by rallying
for a 7-6 victory. Porcello is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in his last four match-ups
with Minnesota (29-34), winners in 11 of 18 and six of eight at home.
The Twins
have dropped five of seven to the Tigers after winning two of three in the only
meeting in Minnesota this season from April 1-4. Before its opening series in
2013, Detroit had won 15 of 19 road games against its AL Central rival. The
Tigers will try to register another win in Minnesota by adding to Scott Diamond's
recent woes. Diamond is 1/3 with a 7.26 ERA in his last six starts, and he gave
up a career-high seven runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings in a 7-0 defeat in
Washington on Sunday.
