Daily tips for May 10

NRL (rd 9) for May 10

Rabbitohs v Cowboys, ANZ Stadium, Friday, May 10, 7.35pm

Sitting on the bottom rung of the top eight with four wins and four losses, Cowboys coach Neil Henry will be well aware that his troops have played current top-eight sides three times so far this season and have lost all three. Needless to say they will need rapid and considerable improvement if they are to upset the high-flying Rabbitohs.

Sitting pretty alongside Melbourne at the top of the table with just one loss from their first eight games, the Rabbitohs look a well-oiled unit this season as rugby league’s most successful club continue their quest for a first premiership in 42 years. If North Queensland find their best form, they are one side that can certainly knock Souths off their perch – but they haven’t given any real indication of that happening so far this season.

Last week’s narrow win over battlers Parramatta won’t convince anyone that they have turned the corner just yet – even if they have now won two in a row – and with Souths having knocked over Manly and Brisbane in the past fortnight it’s hard to see them falling short in this one too. – Preview courtesy of Ben Blaschke, NRL.com

Suggested bet: Rabbitohs -9.5 (three units) WIN (28-10)

Other tip: Wests Tigers +6 LOSE v Sharks -40 WIN (6-30)

AFL (rd 7) for May 10

Geelong v Essendon (Etihad Stadium, Friday, May 10, 7.50pm AEST)

Plenty of tipsters scored the maximum ‘nine’ last week but round seven presents a sterner test, highlighted by this sold-out clash between Geelong and Essendon on Friday night football.

It’s first versus second as the only two remaining undefeated sides clash in the match of the round. Michael Hurley, Jake Carlisle, Dustin Fletcher, Jason Winderlich and Dyson Heppell all return for the Bombers while the Cats lose Joel Corey from their best XXII.

The Bombers have answered every call this season but their numbers dropped off last week against GWS and this is their toughest test to date. The Cats have lost this fixture just twice in the past 12 meetings, with high scores a common feature when these two sides play.

Suggested bet: Game total +205.5 LOSE (113-85)

Racing for May 10

Horse racing: Geelong (Vic), Albury (NSW), Coffs Harbour (NSW), Ipswich (Qld)
Harness racing: Gold Coast (Qld), Melton (Vic), Port Pirie (SA), Wagga Wagga (NSW), Newcastle (NSW), Gloucester Park (WA)
Greyhound racing: Casino (NSW), Mt Gambier (SA), Bendigo (Vic), The Gardens (NSW), Ipswich (Qld), Geelong (Vic), Wentworth Park (NSW), Mandurah (WA), Winnellie Park (NT)

South-eastern Australia’s never-ending autumn continues today with warm and sunny conditions the order of the day. Racing today at Geelong is on the synthetic track, which is rated a good (3). Our focus is on race 7, the A & L Windows & Doors 0-68 Handicap over 2200 metres.

After running a gallant third in his last run at Geelong, #3 Wairoa looks poised to collect a fifth win in his 18 starts. The form out of that race has been franked with Escado winning the SA Derby last Saturday and Aurum Spirit saluting at Geelong last Sunday. #5 Hold True looks the logical challenger, and these two should fill the top two placings.

Suggested bet: Geelong R7 boxed exacta 3,7 LOSE

Geelong R4 #6 Oceanographer (win) 1st ($2.20)
Albury R4 #2 Frog Hollow (win) LOSE (3rd)

MLB for May 10

Philadelphia Phillies (16-19) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (19-15), Chase Field, Phoenix, AZ, Friday, May 10, 11.40am

Patrick Corbin is among the best pitchers in the NL, a status Cole Hamels is trying to re-establish. The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to win for the seventh straight time with Corbin (6-0 when pitching as a favourite this season) on the mound when they face Hamels and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of this four-game set.

Corbin (4-0, 1.80 ERA) is among the league leaders in wins and ERA after going 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and one save in 22 games (17 starts) as a rookie last year. The left-hander was spotted a six-run lead in the second inning on Saturday, and cruised through seven while yielding one run and five hits with seven strikeouts to win 8-1 at San Diego.

Hamels (1-4, 4.34), a three-time All-Star and 2008 World Series MVP, may feel the same way after compiling a 2.31 ERA and holding opponents to .171 average over his last five starts. However, he has just a 1-2 record to show for it since he's been backed by an average of 2.1 runs.

Suggested bet: Diamondbacks WIN (three units @ $1.88) WIN (1-2)

Athletics @ Indians WIN WIN (2-9)
Yankees WIN @ Rockies WIN (3-1)

NHL playoffs for May 10

Eastern Conference quarter-finals, game 5: New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins, CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh, PA, Friday, May 10, 9.10am (series tied at 2-2)

We’re loving this series and it’s just been made more intriguing with a change in the Pittsburgh net. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma insists he still believes in Marc-Andre Fleury, but that didn't stop him making a switch he hopes will shift momentum in Pittsburgh's highly entertaining but slightly bewildering first-round playoff series with the New York Islanders.

Tomas Vokoun will get the start in net for the Penguins in Game 5 on Thursday, a move necessitated by three straight shaky performances by Fleury and Vokoun’s eye-popping numbers against the Islanders this season.

New York looked to be little more than a speed bump for Pittsburgh after the Penguins rolled to a 5-0 win in Game 1. Yet the Islanders have bounced back to win two of the last three while pumping 16 goals by Fleury. New York’s dominant performance in third period of Game 4 allowed the Islanders to escape what would have been a 3-1 hole.

The longer things go, the more Pittsburgh hopes its star-studded roster dotted with Stanley Cup winners and Cup-hungry veterans will get into a rhythm. We smell some panic in the Penguins camp, and can’t help but take some of the excellent value about the Islanders.

Suggested bet: Islanders +1.5 (two units @ $1.62) LOSE, Islanders WIN (one unit @ $2.90) LOSE, game total -6 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (0-4)

Tips

ECQF5: Senators @ Canadiens -5 (3-1) LOSE (6-1)
WCQF5: Wild @ Blackhawks -1.5 (1-3) WIN (1-5)

Note: no NBA playoff games are scheduled for today
