Daily tips for May 13

NRL (rd 9) for May 13

Manly Sea Eagles v Sydney Roosters, Brookvale Oval, Monday, May 13, 7pm AEST

On a rare Monday night of action in both the AFL and NRL, the spotlight north of the border is on Brookvale Oval for the clash between the Sea Eagles and Roosters. The Sea Eagles – NRL premiers just two years ago – look every bit the premiership contender again this season and showed that they still boast tremendous depth after overcoming injury and suspension woes to break a 16-year hoodoo at WIN Jubilee Stadium last week.

In team changes, Manly welcomes Steve Matai back from suspension this week with Tom Symonds back to the bench. Brett Stewart was named in the 17 earlier this week before scans confirmed he would be ruled out for a month. No official announcement has been made as to who will play fullback although Jorge Taufua filled in admirably in the win over the Dragons. For the Roosters, Sam Moa’s knee injury sees Martin Kennedy move into the starting side up-front with Frank-Paul Nuuausala coming into the 17 on the bench.

The edge defence will be crucial for both sides in this one. The Roosters boast a seriously imposing back row with Sonny Bill Williams on the right, Mitch Aubusson on the left and Luke O’Donnell and Aidan Guerra coming off the bench. They will take plenty of stopping, but so will Manly with Anthony Watmough in top form and Justin Horo looking like a new man this season on the left fringe. – Preview with thanks to Ben Blaschke, NRL.com

Suggested bets: Sea Eagles +2 (one unit @ $1.91) LOSE, game total -34 (two units @ $1.91) WIN (4-16)

AFL (rd 7) for May 13

St Kilda v Carlton, Etihad Stadium, Monday, May 13, 7.40pm AEST

Monday night footy returns for 2013 featuring two sides seemingly headed in opposite directions. Alarm bells have to be ringing in the Saints camp after a fifth loss for the season against Collingwood on Friday night.

Their experienced players are struggling for form and the new guard just aren’t making an impact. St Kilda’s only win has come over Greater Western Sydney with other losses to Gold Coast, Richmond, Essendon and the Sydney Swans making up their season to date.

Meanwhile, the Blues have put together three wins in a row to make their disappointing start to the season a distant memory. They are up and about behind the work of their fleet footed forwards and ability to win the contested footy. The Saints lose Justin Koschitzke and Sam Gilbert for this one, while Carlton have Andrew Carrazzo and Matthew Kreuzer back tonight.

Suggested bets: Carlton -23.5 (two units @ $1.91) LOSE, game total -197.5 (two units @ $1.91) WIN (77-68)

Racing for May 13

Horse racing: Horsham (Vic – abandoned), Dubbo (NSW)
Harness racing: Yarra Valley (Vic), Menangle (NSW), Albion Park (Qld), Globe Derby (SA), Hobart (Tas), Pinjarra (WA)
Greyhound racing: Albion Park (Qld), Angle Park (SA), Ballarat (Vic), Bathurst (NSW), Bulli (NSW), Cranbourne (Vic), Launceston (Tas), Northam (WA), Shepparton (Vic)

After a tough Saturday and a day to lick our wounds, it’s back to the grind with just the one provincial meeting scheduled after the Horsham meeting was abandoned. The weather looks good for the meeting at Dubbo, where the track is rated a good (3).

Race 5 is the Sam’s Fence Hire Class 3 Hcp over 1600m, in which we’ve settled on the top weight #1 Akamas as our best of the day. Greg Ryan will carry 58kg from barrier 10 but we don’t expect that to be much of a problem for this 3yo gelding, which has chalked up two wins, two seconds and a third from nine starts.

Trained by Luke Griffith at Scone, Akamas won impressively last Monday at Quirindi over the same distance and looks ideally placed to make it successive wins here. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on #2 Jolly Joker (ed: won @ $6.70!) in race 1 – he rates well and should fill one of the top two placings.

Suggested bet: Dubbo R5 #1 Akamas WIN (three units) 1st ($3.10)

Harness racing tip: Globe Derby R1 #8 Carbohydrate (win) 1st ($1.20)
Greyhound racing tip: Shepparton R10 #2 Arizona Dozer (win) 1st ($1.20)

MLB for May 13

Los Angeles Angels (14-22) @ Chicago White Sox (14-20), U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL, Monday, May 13, 10.05am

Sunday night is supposed to be the marquee match-up, but instead, the Los Angeles Angels have been the biggest disappointment of the season from any fans perspective. They’re nine games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West and have been so bad that they’re actually on a three-game winning streak and find themselves in that position!

While Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols are terribly out of form, Mike Trout is starting to shake out of his sophomore slump. In his past eight games, he’s 12 for 34 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Trout is coming off of a 2 for 4 performance on Sunday with 1 HR and 2 RBI and the Halos have to feel good about his progress. It appears that the Angels will go as far as Trout takes them.

This game could come down to the pitching as both starting pitchers can shutdown any offence in the majors. While Chris Sale has been sailing along, C.J. Wilson came up with a huge 12-strikeout performance in his last outing against Houston. This game appears pretty even so we’ll take the value about the underdog.

Suggested bet: Angels WIN (two units @ $2.17) LOSE (0-3)

NHL playoffs for May 13

Eastern Conference quarter-finals, game 7: Detroit Red Wings @ Anaheim Ducks, Honda Center, Anaheim, CA, Monday, May 13, 12.05pm (series tied at 3-3)

A cracking playoff series gets an appropriately grand finale when Anaheim hosts Detroit in Game 7. Although the Ducks and Red Wings could be stressed by this test, most are treating it as an opportunity and a reward for nearly two weeks of exhausting work.

After four overtime games, several clutch goals and plenty of wild momentum swings, the second-seeded Ducks have one last chance to finish off the resilient Red Wings, who have one final opportunity to nudge past the talented Pacific Division champions.

The Ducks are playing the fifth Game 7 in the franchise's two-decade history, but just the second at home. Anaheim's most recent Game 7 was in 2009 at Detroit, where the Red Wings eliminated the eighth-seeded Ducks.

Detroit is playing Game 7 for the 23rd time in its much longer franchise history, but nearly all of those decisive games were at home. The Wings are just 2-4 in a Game 7 on the road but fancy their all-star veterans to be the deciding factor here.

Suggested bet: Red Wings WIN (two units @ $2.15) WIN, game total -5 (two units @ $1.77) PUSH (3-2)

Other tips

ECQF6: Capitals @ Rangers WIN WIN -5 WIN (3-2)
ECQF6: Bruins @ Maple Leafs WIN WIN +5 LOSE (3-2)

NBA playoffs for May 13

Western Conference semi-finals, game 4: San Antonio Spurs @ Golden State Warriors, ORACLE Arena, Oakland, CA, Monday, May 13, 4.05am (Spurs lead 2-1)

Will he or won’t he? Stephen Curry never surfaced during the portion of Golden State’s light shoot around open to reporters at the team's downtown Oakland headquarters, sounding alarm bells regarding his nagging left ankle injury.

The Warriors said X-rays on Curry’s ankle were negative and no MRI exam was scheduled. Curry told a pool reporter in the afternoon that he’s hopeful to play – though remained murky about how much or how well – and is officially a game-time decision for this critical Game 4 tilt of the Western Conference semi-finals.

The Warriors led for 95 of 106 minutes in the first two games, leaving San Antonio with a disappointing split after blowing a 16-point lead in the final four minutes of Game 1 to lose in double overtime. Curry and backcourt teammate Klay Thompson took turns with scintillating shooting displays before both went cold in Game 3 for the first time. We say Curry plays and the Warriors win at coin-flip odds.

Suggested bets: Warriors WIN (two units @ $1.91) WIN, game total -198 (two units @ $1.91) WIN (87-97)
