Daily tips for December 4

What’s on today

There’s a full card of EPL games scheduled tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday morning which kicks-off with an intriguing clash between Crystal Palace (with new manager Tony Pulis presiding over his first home fixture) and West Ham United. There are eight games scheduled in the NBA with the visit of Phoenix to Memphis arguably the pick of the card while in the NHL, the visit of LA to nearby Anaheim is the standout game on a nine-game slate. The midweek racing card takes us to Sale, Ipswich, Balaklava and Bunbury with a metro meeting at Canterbury and night racing at Launceston.

Racing for December 4

Horse racing: Sale (Vic – dead 5), Canterbury (NSW – good 3), Ipswich (Qld – good 3), Balaklava (SA – slow 6), Bunbury (WA – good 3), Launceston (Tas – night/dead 5). Harness racing: Bathurst (NSW), Bendigo (Vic), Redcliffe (Qld). Greyhound racing: Albion Park (Qld), Bendigo (Vic), Richmond (NSW), Angle Park (SA), Bulli (NSW), The Meadows (Vic), Cranbourne (Vic), Cannington (WA), Ballarat (Vic), The Gardens (NSW), Rockhampton (Qld).

Melbourne has just been drenched by a line of thunderstorms meaning the rain will sweep across East Gippsland and Sale just about the time of the first race on the eight-event card this afternoon. The track is currently rated a dead 5 but watch for a likely downgrade. The leans listed below are based on a dead 5 so there’ll be no confirmed bets for Sale today.

Best of the day: In contrast, the weather is fine with the mercury set to climb into the high 20s for today’s seven-race card at Canterbury. The opening event is the Australian Turf Club Handicap over 1250 metres for one-metro wins. Just six horses will jump with #3 Darciwood looking hard to beat. The 4yo gelding has won two of four starts including a narrow victory here over 1200m on November 14. Kiwi hoop James McDonald (pictured) takes the ride for Team Hawkes and look for the son of Darci Brahma to race on the speed before dispatching of this bunch.

Canterbury R1 #3 Darciwood (win) LOSE (2nd)

Other confirmed bets

Canterbury R3 #4 Pentometer (win) LOSE (3rd) – another small field here with just seven to go around in this one-metro win handicap over 1900m. This 4yo gelding from the Waller stable has won his past two including first-up here on November 20 over 1580m. Look for him to make three in a row here.

Balaklava R7 #7 Night Breeze (E/W 1x3) 3rd ($1.45) – nothing went right for this 4yo gelding last time out at Morphettville but he was just pipped at the post. He’s down in weight for this 0-62 affair over 1050 metres and, from barrier 2, Joe Bowditch should steer him to his first win for Peter Macdonald.

Adding: Ipswich R4 #3 Monicelli (E/W 1x3) 1st ($5.10/$1.80)

Leans

Canterbury R4 #4 Miss Fearless (E/W) LOSE (U/P)
Canterbury R7 #8 Lady De Chine (E/W) LOSE (4th)
Sale R2 #11 Zedi Gold (E/W 1x3) 3rd ($1.60)
Sale R4 # 6 Riviera Riches (E/W 1x4) 3rd ($1.40)
Sale R5 # 2 Sunset In Venice (win) SCRATCHED
Sale R6 #1 Cadel Triomphe (win) 1st ($2.30)
Ipswich R7 #3 Lucia (win) LOSE (U/P)
Balaklava R2 #7 Coup De Beel (win) LOSE (2nd)
Balaklava R3 #4 Leahone (win) LOSE (2nd)

Harness racing tip: Bendigo R4 #5 Major Deed (win) 1st ($1.90)
Greyhound racing tip: Ballarat R7 #4 Born Ali (win) 1st ($2.60)

NHL for December 4

San Jose Sharks (18-3-5, 41 pts) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (14-10-3, 31 pts), Air Canada Centre, Toronto, ON, Canada, Wednesday, December 4, 11.10am

NHL best of the day: The San Jose Sharks have an NHL-low three regulation losses, in part because of how they’ve jumped on teams in the first period. They’ll try to continue that early game dominance as they go for their sixth straight win against a Toronto Maple Leafs team that’s dropped four in a row. The Sharks’ 92 goals scored are among the most in the league and their 60 allowed are among the fewest. San Jose is in first place in the Pacific Division, emerging as one of the top teams in a loaded Western Conference. San Jose has built its gaudy record in part by beating up on East teams, going 7-1-2. It appears to have a good chance to pad that mark during a four-game road trip that features three opponents from that conference to start the stretch. First up is Toronto, which the Sharks have beaten in five of the past six meetings and is 0-2-2 in its last four overall. The Maple Leafs (14-10-3) have scored two or fewer goals five times in the previous six contests, going 1-3-2. The S/U price is a bit short so I’ll take the Sharks to win this in regulation.

San Jose Sharks WIN NT @ Toronto Maple Leafs (one unit @ $2.00) WIN (4-2)

Other confirmed bets

11.10am: Tampa Bay Lightning (16-9-1, 33 pts) @ Columbus Blue Jackets (10-14-3, 23 pts) -5.5 (one unit @ $1.68) WIN (0-1) – Tampa Bay (16-9-1) is 0-3-1 in its last four on the road and closed out November with a 3-0 home defeat to Pittsburgh last Friday. The Lightning converted at 9.1 per cent on the power play in that month to finish ahead of only Dallas' 7.3 mark. This also figures to be a low-scoring contest since these teams do not shoot much. Tampa Bay averages 27.9 shots on goal and Columbus 27.1 to rank among the league's lowest figures.

11.40am: Ottawa Senators (10-13-4, 24 pts) @ Florida Panthers (7-15-5, 19 pts) WIN (one unit @ $2.00) LOSE (4-2) – the hosts represent solid value in this spot. Ottawa has won 12 of the past 14 meetings with Florida (7-15-5), including a 3-2 home win on November 9 but have dropped seven of 10 games since. Panthers goalie Tim Thomas has a 1.81 GAA and two shutouts while winning seven of his last 10 against the Senators. He made 29 saves against them last month. I’m expecting at least three Florida goals, which should be good for victory.

Adding – 11.10am: Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Islanders +5.5 (one unit @ $1.83) LOSE (3-2)

Leans

Pittsburgh Penguins WIN $1.65 @ New York Islanders WIN (3-2)
Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals WIN $1.65 LOSE (4-1)
Dallas Stars @ Chicago Blackhawks WIN NT $1.77 LOSE (4-3)
Vancouver Canucks WIN $1.77 WIN @ Nashville Predators -5 $2.08 WIN (3-1)
Phoenix Coyotes @ Edmonton Oilers WIN $2.08 LOSE (6-2)
Los Angeles Kings @ Anaheim Ducks WIN $1.79 LOSE (3-2)

NBA for December 4

Toronto Raptors (6-10, 3-4 away) @ Golden State Warriors (10-8, 5-2 home), ORACLE Arena, Oakland, CA, Wednesday, December 4, 2.40pm

NBA best of the day: Coming off a much-needed win, the Golden State Warriors are hoping they've put their recent struggles behind them. A visit from the Toronto Raptors could help them take another step in the right direction. Golden State (10-8) had lost five of six before bouncing back in Sunday’s 115-113 win at Sacramento. Stephen Curry made a pair of free throws with 8.6 seconds left and Andrew Bogut (pictured) blocked a potential game-tying layup in the closing moments. The Raptors have not been in first place in the Atlantic Division since 2007 and despite losing three games in a row and sitting at 6-10 for the season, they lead their division in the putrid Eastern Conference where only two teams have winning records. The Raptors had a chance this week to take a pseudo-strangle hold on the division, but were only able to go 1-3 in a four game homestand. The Raptors dropped to 1-8 when allowing at least 92 points. That doesn't bode well for a team that's surrendered 113.1 per game during a 3-12 stretch against Golden State. Toronto is 0-3 SU and 0-3 ATS ion their past three, and I’m not expecting things to improve here.

Toronto Raptors @ Golden State Warriors -7.5 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (103-112)

Other confirmed bets

11.40am: Detroit Pistons (7-10, 2-5 away) @ Miami Heat (14-3, 9-1 home) -10 (one unit @ $1.91) LOSE (107-97) – the Heat look to extend their latest winning streak to 11 games Tuesday night when they host the Pistons. Miami lead the NBA in field goal percentage (51.3) with LeBron James shooting 59.8 per cent from the field and a staggering 64.8 per cent in the past seven games. The Pistons had a plus-5.3 margin against the Heat last season but lost two of three meetings. The Heat have won seven of the past eight meetings at home by an average of 12.0 points.

12.10pm: Phoenix Suns (9-8, 4-5 away) @ Memphis Grizzlies (8-8, 3-5 home) +190 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (91-110) – the Suns are still one of the best teams ATS, but after putting a stop to the Portland Trailblazers winning streak and two contests against the hapless Utah Jazz, the Suns have also become a great ‘over’. They’re 10-7 O/U overall thanks to a good balance on offence and defence. They are in the top half of the league when it comes to scoring at 101.7 points per game and they give up 99.7 points per game. Memphis is also coming off a 97-88 loss to Brooklyn.

Leans

Orlando Magic @ Philadelphia 76ers -3.5 $1.91 LOSE (125-126)
Milwaukee Bucks @ Boston Celtics NO LEAN
Denver Nuggets @ Brooklyn Nets +4.5 $1.91 LOSE (111-87)
Charlotte Bobcats @ Dallas Mavericks -194.5 $1.91 WIN (82-89)
Oklahoma City Thunder -6.5 $1.91 LOSE @ Sacramento Kings -203 $1.91 WIN (97-95)

EPL for December 4

Crystal Palace (2-1-10, 7 pts) v West Ham United (3-4-6, 13 pts, Selhurst Park, South Norwood, London, England, Wednesday, December 4, 7am

Crystal Palace welcomed 14 new players to the club after their promotion back to the EPL. After 13 games and just two wins, Palace have shed manager Ian Holloway for Tony Pulis (pictured), who needed just one game on the touchline in tracksuit and cap to decide the squad needed tweaking! It will take a huge swing in momentum for the Eagles to avoid the drop, but they’re only six points from safety and have lost only one of their past three. If Pulis can get a win in his first home game in charge – against a West Ham team that falls firmly into the ‘catchable’ category – then Palace could be on their way. Coming off a 1-0 loss to Norwich over the weekend, Palace will probably again go with Marouane Chamakh and Cameron Jerome up front for the opening game of this midweek round of EPL games. Palace are unbeaten in their last four league matches with West Ham at Selhurst Park but have only won two of 13 home meetings in total (W2, D6, L5).

The Hammers aren’t exactly setting the world on fire with a run of five without victory before the weekend’s 3-0 win over Fulham. West Ham striker Carlton Cole (who’s short-term contract expires next month) is pushing for his first start of the season after scoring in that game off the bench. Ravel Morrison is also in line for a recall, but George McCartney has been left out of the squad. Palace's 2-0 win at Upton Park in April 1992 was the last time the away team triumphed in this fixture. There have been four home wins and four draws since that game. They are yet to earn a point after going behind this season. The last Premier League meeting between these sides ended 3-3 at Selhurst Park in May 1998, and three of the last five league meetings between the sides have ended level. Given the Hammers’ own anaemic form in front of goal, expect a low-scoring affair here and I’m sure Pulis would be happy with one point in his first game on the sidelines in south London.

Confirmed bets

Crystal Palace v West Ham -2.5 (1.75 units @ $1.67) WIN (1-0)
Crystal Palace v West Ham (0-0) (0.25 units @ $9.00 LOSE (1-0)

Leans

Crystal Palace v West Ham DRAW $3.10 LOSE (1-0)
Crystal Palace v West Ham -1.5 $3.10 WIN (1-0)

• Selections are listed in three categories – 1) Suggested (likely bet but yet to be finalised); 2) Confirmed (locked in at the price listed); and 3) Leans (tips, but not recommended bets); all times quoted are Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT); prices with thanks to Centrebet (except where markets are not available), correct at time of publication – for most people gambling is an exciting and fun recreational pursuit. Daily tips for December 3

What’s on today

Monday Night Football serves up a classic as the two NFL sides with the best records in the AFC – the 9-2 Saints and 10-1 Seahawks – clash at Centurylink Field in Seattle. It’s a similar case in the NBA where Eastern Conference frontrunner Indiana (16-1) journeys to the home court of the side with the best record in the Western Conference, the 14-3 Portland Trail Blazers. The pick of the four NHL games is a Western Conference showdown between playoff aspirants St Louis (39 pts) at Los Angeles (36 pts).

Racing for December 3

Horse racing: Wangaratta (Vic – dead 4), Taree (NSW – slow 6), Gatton (Qld – good 3). Harness racing: Menangle (NSW), Albion Park (Qld), Echuca (Vic), Gloucester Park (WA). Greyhound racing: Hobart (Tas), Gawler (SA), Horsham (Vic), Ipswich (Qld), Lismore (NSW), Warragul (Vic), Gosford (NSW), Townsville (Qld), Mandurah (WA).

Best of the day: There’s a modest line-up of three thoroughbred meetings scheduled today and I like the look of a couple of runners at Taree on the mid-north NSW coast. I’m hoping the slow (6) holds up as it presents a challenge for #6 Munfasla in the Sygenta Class 3 Handicap over 1250 metres. The 3yo Belle Esprit filly will jump from barrier 1 but runners tend to head off the rail in the wet at Taree. If the track holds up OK, then it shouldn’t be an issue for the Emirates Park charge, which had her first seven starts for Team Hawkes. She’s won both starts for Neil Goldbolt including here on a heavy (8) a fortnight ago.

Taree R7 #6 Munfasla (E/W 1x2) 3rd ($1.90)

Other confirmed bets

Taree R6 #2 Plateau Gold (E/W 1x3) 2nd ($1.80) – likewise, #2 Plateau Gold will jump from the inside gate in race 6 (the Turfcare NSW Raceday BM70 Handicap over 1000 metres), but class should carry the 4yo gelding home as he eyes a sixth win in just nine starts. Noriyuki Masuda’s 3kg claim won’t hurt his chances either.

Wangaratta R3 #13 Up And Downs (E/W 1x3) 3rd ($1.40) – this 4yo mare was third here at the same grade two weeks back and should appreciate the step up to 1400m in her second run this preparation. Jye McNeil’s claim gets her in at 55kg in this set weights affair.

Wangaratta R6 #7 Theatreman (win) 1st ($1.65) – unplaced just twice in six starts, this 5yo gelding should be too good for this small seven-horse field. He was a last start runner-up here on a slow seven four weeks, but gets better going, James Winks in the saddle and the gun barrier here.

Leans

Taree R1 #7 Aldren (E/W) LOSE (4th)
Taree R2 #3 Isorich (E/W) LOSE (U/P)
Wangaratta R2 #11 Littledoubtaboutit (E/W 1x4) 2nd ($1.40)
Wangaratta R4 #2 Golden Olive (win) 1st ($1.80)
Gatton R2 #6 Little Rip Snorter (E/W 1x3) 1st ($2.90/$1.50)
Gatton R7 #2 Here’s Roger (win)

NHL for December 3

St Louis Blues (18-4-3, 39 pts) @ Los Angeles Kings (16-7-4, 36 pts), STAPLES Center, Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, December 3, 2.40pm

NHL best of the day: The Los Angeles Kings have dominated the St Louis Blues at home. They’ve won eight straight but their major problem is they’ve lost three straight in their own confines. One of those streaks will end on Monday. The Kings are coming off home losses to Calgary, Colorado and New Jersey. The Blues are as good or better than all three of those teams, which means they should be able to get the win here. Los Angeles has gone 1-1-3 in its last five overall since a four-game winning streak, and a sputtering power play is partially to blame. The Kings have gone 0 for 18 with the man advantage in the past five. Los Angeles’ eight-game home run against St. Louis includes playoffs, and the Kings have taken 14 of the past 17 overall match-ups and four straight. The most recent meeting was a 2-1 victory May 10 that closed out a first-round post-season series after the Blues had won the first two games. Despite the Blues' struggles against the Kings, Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak (pictured) is 6-4-0 with a 2.23 GAA and a pair of shutouts against them. He missed the playoffs last season with a lower-body injury.

St Louis Blues WIN @ Los Angeles Kings (one unit @ $1.87) LOSE (1-3)

Other confirmed bets

11.10am: Winnipeg Jets (12-12-4, 28 pts) @ New York Rangers (14-13-0, 28 pts) -5 (one unit @ $1.91) LOSE (5-2)

• The Jets may lie at the bottom of the Central Division but they’re .500 while the Rangers, who’ve won just one game, lie third in the Metropolitan Division. Goals will be a premium here – Cam Talbot has been a revelation in goal for the Rangers. He made 35 saves on Saturday and is 6-1-0 with a 1.49 goals-against average this season. NY has scored two goals or less in seven of their past nine. Winnipeg is averaging fewer than 2.5 goals per game, and I’m expecting a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline here.

Grand salami -20.5 (one unit @ $1.87) WIN (14)

• For those who may not be familiar with this bet type, the Grand Salami is the line on the total number of goals to be scored on a single day of NHL action. The line of 20.5 is uncommonly low for a four-game card but I’m expecting all four games to go under the five-game total, with a four-goal total (or less) looking a likely scenario in both the Devils v Canadiens and Blues v Kings games. I have the tally pegged at 18 goals for the day.

Leans

Winnipeg Jets @ New York Rangers WIN NT $1.88 LOSE (5-2)
New Jersey Devils @ Montreal Canadiens -5 $1.74 WIN (2-3)
Philadelphia Flyers @ Minnesota Wild WIN $1.70 WIN (0-2)

NBA for December 3

Houston Rockets (13-5, 5-3 away) @ Utah Jazz (3-15, 2-6 home), EnergySolutions Arena, Sale Lake City, UT, Tuesday, December 3, 1.10pm

NBA best of the day: The Rockets have definitely kicked it into overdrive after a bumpy start to the season. They are on a five-game winning streak and have won eight of their past nine, including 8-1 against the spread in that time. The Rockets have been a very balanced team scoring the rock with four players scoring at least 15 points per game. More importantly, Dwight Howard is scoring 16.7 points per game to go along with 12.4 boards and 1.9 blocks per game. All-Star guard James Harden (pictured) is among the league leaders with 23.6 points per game. Even with Harden in and out of the line-up, the Rockets have continued to score at a high rate. They’re averaging 111.6 points on 51.2 per cent shooting (including 44.1 per cent from three-point range). Houston also has scored 113.3 per game with a 51.1 field-goal percentage during a four-game winning streak against the Jazz (3-15). The Jazz, 2-6 at home, have shown improvement offensively behind rookie Trey Burke, reaching 100 points in back-to-back contests after scoring that many only once over their first 16

Houston Rockets @ Utah Jazz +201.5 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (103-109)

Other confirmed bets

12.10pm: New Orleans Pelicans (8-8, 3-5 away) @ Chicago Bulls (7-8, 5-0 home) -191.5 (one unit @ $1.91) LOSE (102-102)

• New Orleans fell over the line against a lame New York last night but lost their top scorer Anthony Davis to a non-displaced fracture of his left hand in the first half. It’s a feeling the Bulls know only too well and they are again without Derrick Rose. The Pelicans have scored more than 100 points in six of their past seven while the Bulls haven’t cracked three figures in their past eight. Chicago is one of only three undefeated sides at home (along with Indiana and Oklahoma City). They’ve also won nine of their past 10 against New Orleans.

2.10pm: Indiana Pacers (16-1, 7-1 away) @ Portland Trail Blazers (14-3, 6-1 home) +1.5 (one unit @ $1.91) WIN (102-106)

• Two of the best sides in the NBA clash at the Moda Center as the Pacers continues a five-game road trip against a Portland team that has only lost once over the past three weeks. They continue to be led by a suffocating defence, limiting teams to league lows of 86.5 points per game and 39.0 per cent shooting. However, their offence averages just 97.5 points on 44.8 per cent shooting. Portland is also playing some of its best basketball in years, having tied a franchise record with 13 wins in the month of November.

Leans

Orlando Magic @ Washington Wizards -6 $1.91 WIN (80-98)
Houston Rockets -8 @ Utah Jazz $1.91 LOSE (103-109)
Atlanta Hawks +12 @ San Antonio Spurs $1.91 WIN (100-102)

NFL (week 13) for December 3

New Orleans Saints (9-2, 3-2 away) @ Seattle Seahawks (10-1, 5-0 home); CenturyLink Field, Seattle, WA; Tuesday, December 3, 12.40pm

If the Seahawks can extend their franchise-record home winning streak against the New Orleans Saints, they’ll virtually assure the road to the Super Bowl runs through Seattle. The Seahawks have a one-game lead over the Saints for home-field advantage in the playoffs, and they can effectively build a three-game cushion with a head-to-head victory here. The Seahawks have won six straight since their lone defeat (a 34-28 loss at Indianapolis) and are off to the best start in franchise history at 10-1. Seattle's Russell Wilson is the less-notable QB in this match-up, but he is 13-0 at home with 26 touchdowns against six interceptions. The Seahawks also boast the league’s No. 3 rushing game with Marshawn Lynch (925 yards, 9 TDs) leading the way. The Seahawks have the second-ranked pass defense, but they will be short-handed in the secondary – CB Walter Thurmond is suspended for the next four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and CB Brandon Browner is still out with a groin injury. The Seahawks are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games versus a team with a winning record.

The Saints need a fourth straight win not only to preserve their chances of staying home throughout the playoffs, but also to maintain a one-game lead over Carolina in the NFC South. New Orleans has won three straight, but it's had to squeak out the last two by a combined seven points. After setting a franchise record with 625 total yards three weeks ago in a 49-17 win over Dallas, the offence has been less-than-stellar the past two weeks, but the Saints still rank third in the NFL in total yards per game and second in passing yards. The defence, often a weakness for New Orleans, has been bolstered under coordinator Rob Ryan and has allowed more than 400 total yards only once all season. The home side looks a logical pick but consider these numbers – the Saints are 5-0 ATS in their last five Monday night games while QB Drew Brees (pictured with Jimmy Graham) has won nine straight MNF starts with a 123.6 passer rating in those games. The Saints (who haven’t faced Seattle in almost three years) will get their first look at Wilson and the rejuvenated Seahawks and, while I expect Seattle to win, the Saints should cover.

Confirmed bet

New Orleans Saints +6 @ Seattle Seahawks (one unit @ $1.91) LOSE (7-34)

Leans

New Orleans Saints @ Seattle Seahawks +47.5 $1.91 LOSE (7-34)

NHL for December 2

With no bets for today’s three-game card, here’s a look at who’s hot and who’s not in the NHL with almost 30 games of the 2013-14 season completed (with thanks to covers.com):

Chicago Blackhawks (4-0 SU): The Hawks are currently enjoying a six-game winning streak overall (despite playing seven straight on the road) and were 4-0 in the past week. Patrick Kane has returned to his best. His 12-game point streak was snapped Friday, but he notched a goal and one assist in Saturday's win over the Phoenix Coyotes. They return to home ice on Tuesday as to host the Dallas Stars.

Toronto Maple Leafs (0-4 SU): Toronto started the season as good as any side but after a loss to the Montreal Canadiens capped off an 0-4 week, that hot start seems like a distant memory. You'd be hard pressed to find a better 1-2 punch than Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk, but it's the goaltending that has let the Leafs down. James Reimer and Jonathan Bernier rotated starts this week, but allowed nine goals each this week.

Anaheim Ducks (3-0 O/U): The Ducks may have dropped two of three games this week, but they cashed in for ‘over’ bettors. Goalie Jonas Hiller gave up eight goals in his two starts this week and has lost four of this last six starts overall. Dustin Penner, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry continue to be one of the hottest lines in the NHL. They have a tough week upcoming, hosting the Kings Tuesday, before hitting the road to face the 'Hawks and Blues.

New York Islanders (0-3 O/U): Things are not good for the Isles. Many thought the Islanders would parlay an impressive playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins into a decent 2013-14 season. Not so. New York has dropped six-straight hockey games and are having troubles scoring. The team was blanked by the Detroit Red Wings midweek and mustered just four goals in their three games.

NBA for December 2

New Orleans Pelicans (7-8, 2-5 away) @ New York Knicks (3-12, 1-6 home), Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, Monday, December 2, 11.40am

I’m going to bit left-field for today’s top pick as the Knicks return to Madison Square Garden to lick their wounds before hosting the high-flying Pelicans of New Orleans. The dressing room was shut tight after the Knicks 93-80 loss against the Clippers last week as players and officials discussed their plight. There was an immediate response in a narrow loss to the Nuggets, and I’m expecting there’ll be more improvement at home as they try to avoid the franchise’s longest skid in almost eight years. New York’s eight-game slide is its longest since it dropped nine in a row March 19-April 4, 2006. That team finished 23-59, the franchise’s worst record since 1964. The Knicks (3-12) are coming off a four-game road trip where they shot just 42 per cent, and haven't scored more than 100 points in seven straight contests. Carmelo Anthony (pictured) has led the team in scoring in all 15 games this season, the only player in the NBA to be his team's top scorer in every game. New York is averaging 92.4 points per game to rank 25th in the NBA.

Although the Knicks are averaging 5.6 points more at home than on the road, they’ve lost six straight at Madison Square Garden since a season-opening win over Milwaukee. Unlike the Knicks, the Pelicans (7-8) do not have one primary, go-to scorer. Instead New Orleans relies on its depth, with six players scoring more than 10.5 points per game. Anthony Davis leads the way at 19.6 per game, to go along with 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 blocks. Forward Ryan Anderson has been a key in recent weeks, averaging 19.0 points since returning from a toe injury on November 16. The Pelicans snapped a four-game road-losing streak Friday with a 121-105 victory over the 76ers. Eric Gordon led five players in double figures with a season-high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Jrue Holiday added 20 points and 13 assists in his return to Philadelphia. The Knicks have dominated the Pelicans of late, winning eight of the past nine games. They swept last season’s series, with Anthony averaging 28.0 points.

NFL (week 13) for December 2

Atlanta Falcons (2-9, 0-5 away) @ Buffalo Bills (4-7, 3-3 home); Rogers Centre (pictured), Toronto, ON, Canada; Monday, December 2, 8.10am

The best thing that can be said about Atlanta’s season is that they’re headed towards their highest draft pick since selecting quarterback Matt Ryan in 2008. Ryan’s struggles away from home are a major reason for the team’s sub-standard record, and he’ll look to help Atlanta end a five-game losing streak when it faces the Buffalo Bills. This game won’t be played at a frigid Ralph Wilson Stadium; rather under the roof at the Rogers Centre, just a short trip around the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto, Canada. The Falcons (2-9) went 13-3 and hosted the NFC championship game in 2012, but they’ll finish this season under .500 for the first time since going 4-12 in 2007. Atlanta is tied with Jacksonville and Houston for the NFL’s worst mark. Coach Mike Smith has eluded to the use of players off the bench being afforded a chance to impress during the final month of the regular season. Ryan has completed 72.4 per cent of his passes while posting a 106.2 rating in Atlanta, but he has a 60.5 completion percentage, eight touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 70.2 rating in five road games (all losses).

Buffalo has endured injury problems of its own, but rookie QB EJ Manuel returned from a three-game absence to throw for 245 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Jets while the Bills’ defence picked off New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith three times in that 34-17 win on November 17 before the Bills’ bye week. Jarius Byrd had two of those interceptions and has three in his past two games. His 21 picks since entering the league in 2009 rank second overall. The Bills (4-7) ended a three-game losing streak and are anticipating receivers Stevie Johnson (groin) and Robert Woods (ankle) back after resting during the bye. Almost unbelievably, Buffalo is still holding on to slim playoff hopes, though it would have to jump ahead of multiple teams to capture an AFC wild-card spot. The Bills haven’t been to the playoffs since losing to Tennessee in the Music City Miracle in 1999. The Falcons are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games on fieldturf while the Bills are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games. I’ve bought back inside a field goal, but love the Bills here.

EPL for December 2

Manchester City (7-1-4) v Swansea City (4-3-5), Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England, Sunday, December 2, 3.10am

4-2-4-5-1-3-7-5-6-4 – that’s the number of goals Manchester City has scored in its home games so far this season. With that free-scoring form, it’s not unreasonable to expect that the trend will continue against Swansea City. With 41 goals in all competitions at home this season, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are full of confidence – they were devastating against Tottenham, with Jesus Navas coming in from the right and Samir Nasri from the left to support Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo (pictured) up front as they rattled six into the Spurs’ net. But the defence hasn’t looked as settled without Vincent Kompany, and Pellegrini is yet to decide to go with Joe Hart or Costel Pantilimon in goal. Defender Matija Nastasic is also likely to miss the next three weeks with a calf injury. City is the only team in any of the four English leagues to have a 100 per cent home record. They have scored in 56 consecutive Premier League home games, 10 short of the record of 66 held by Manchester United.

Despite winning at Fulham last week, Swansea have been struggling recently and their confidence will have been further dented by a Europa League defeat to Valencia on Thursday. Swansea have won two, drawn two and lost two of their six league matches immediately following a midweek European match. Matters were made worse by the hamstring injury suffered to striker Wilfried Bony who is likely to be out for several weeks. Angel Rangel misses here with a calf injury but Wayne Routledge is fit. Swansea have lost on their past seven visits to Manchester City. Their last win there was a 2-1 victory in an old Second Division match in March 1951. Swansea’s first-ever Premier League match was at the City of Manchester Stadium in August 2011. Sergio Aguero scored two goals on his debut as City won 4-0 – and went on to win the title that season. Swansea have performed better away than at home in this season's Premier League, winning three of their six matches, including at Fulham last weekend.
