It’s a wet
and wintry Sunday in Melbourne for today’s eight-race card on a heavy (8) at
Sportingbet Park Sandown, running on thre Lakeside course. The highlights on
the card re the $100,000 Crisp Steeple and the $200,000 Grant National Hurdle, while
our best of the day comes up in the last race, the Le Pine Funerals Plate over
1500m for the 0-82 raters. #9 Bachelor Royal is a lightly raced 4yo gelding
from the Andrew Payne yard in Ballarat. He’s won three of five including one in
heavy going, and was a last start second to Lord Durante at Moonee Valley six
weeks ago. Craig Newitt takes the ride from barrier 11.

for July 14
Sydney v
Greater Western Sydney, SCG, Sunday, July 14, 1.10pm
The Swans
may be missing at least six of their best XXII but still won’t need much more
than third gear to see off the challenge of their crosstown rivals. The Giants had
a terrific chance to break their 2013 duck last week only to fall four points
short after leading at each break, and can also take some confidence from their
round one showing against the Swans. Sam Reid re-joined a Sydney injury list
that already comprised Adam Goodes, Lewis Jetta, Rhyce Shaw and Lewis
Roberts-Thomson. This is the first meeting between these sides at the SCG and,
with fine and cool conditions forecast, this could turn into a free scoring
affair. Not much betting interest here, with slight leans to the GWS covering
the huge line and game total ‘over’.
Suggested
bet: Giants +80.5 LOSE (171-42)
Footscray
v Essendon, Etihad Stadium, Sunday, July 14, 3.20pm
Either the
bookies know something we don’t, or they’ve wrapped an early Christmas present
for us here. Despite stern resistance from Port Adelaide last week, Essendon
still managed to prevail by five goals while the Bulldogs fell over the line
against GWS in Canberra. It’s also been three years since Footscray has managed
to get within eight goals of the Bombers across four meetings. Will Minson may
be enjoying a career year in the ruck, but even his dominance in the centre is
likely to be negated by the numerous tall options at the disposal of James Hird
across the park. Jobe Watson’s loss will be telling but not enough to slow up
the Bombers – seems that ASADA looms as Essendon’s biggest challenger ahead of
the 2013 finals!
Suggested
bet: Essendon -39.5 LOSE (90-121)
West Coast
v Fremantle, Patersons Stadium, Sunday, July 14, 4.40pm AEST
There’s
more to this game than meets the eye – Freo’s stats have dipped from the peaks
they set in the first half of the season and, while they regained Matthew
Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands last week, they lose number one defender Luke
McPharlin for the 38th edition of the Western Derby. The Eagles are trending
the opposite direction. They weathered everything the Crows could throw at them
in the wet at AAMI Stadium last Saturday night and have somehow clawed their
way back to 7-7 and a shot at making the eight. It’s an intriguing line as only
one of the past seven between these sides has been decided by less than 28
points. Freo have been cash cows for us this season, and we hope that continues
here when they fail to cover the line in an upset loss to the Eagles.
Suggested bet: West Coast +15.5 LOSE (93-121)
CFL for

Winnipeg
Blue Bombers (1-1) @ Hamilton Tiger Cats (0-2), Alumni Stadium, Guelph, ON, Saturday,
July 13, 8.40am
The
Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ defence made a statement with 11 sacks in two games
against the Montreal Alouettes to start the season. Winnipeg will try to apply
the same pressure to quarterback Henry Burris and the host Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The Blue Bombers will be the second team to visit Hamilton at its temporary
home – the Tiger-Cats lost to the Edmonton Eskimos in heavy rain in Week 2 and
are the only team without a win. Burris, who leads the CFL in passing yards with 595, believes his offence has
to get better, but the problem with Hamilton is defence. The Tiger-Cats allowed
a league-high 69 points through two games and look especially vulnerable
against the run after surrendering 298 total rushing yards. Winnipeg running
back Chad Simpson, limited to 90 yards, will look to exploit the same holes
Edmonton and the Toronto Argonauts found in Hamilton’s porous secondary. (Preview with thanks to covers.com)

MLB for
July 14
Chicago
White Sox (36-53, 17-32 away) @ Philadelphia Phillies (46-47, 24-20 home),
Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA, Sunday, July 14, 3.10am
Postponed
from yesterday and the first of two games between these sides today, the
visiting White Sox will try to continue their hot hitting against a Philadelphia
Phillies team in the midst of its most successful month of the season. Chicago
(36-53) is second-to-last in baseball with 336 runs, and its 0.301 on-base
percentage and 0.384 slugging percentage are also near the bottom. However, the
White Sox hope the postponement of this series opener won’t halt any momentum
earned after they scored 22 runs while taking two of three from AL
Central-leading Detroit. Chicago won 6-3 on Thursday behind Josh Phegley’s
grand slam, his third homer in five games since making his big league debut. The White
Sox face a serious challenge against Philadelphia, which has won seven of 10.
The Phillies (46-47) are on the verge of being .500 for the first time since
they were 31-31 on June 7. Scheduled Phillies Game 1 starter Jonathan Pettibone
(5-3, 3.84 ERA) has posted a 2.35 ERA in his last four starts and won the past
two, matching a season high with six strikeouts in each. He limited the Braves
to one run over 5 1/3 innings of a 7-3 win Sunday. Chicago counters with John
Danks (2-6, 4.31), who is 1-2 in his last three starts despite a 2.53 ERA.
Danks, who gave up three runs in seven innings of a 3-1 road loss to Tampa Bay
on Sunday, has received six runs of support in the three games. The left-hander
has gone 7-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 19 interleague starts but is 0-2 with a 4.15
ERA in three such outings this season.
